2010 Goethe Writer in Residence - Dagmar Röhrlich

The UBC Institute for European Studies (IES) in partnership with the UBC School of Journalism and the Goethe Institute-Toronto welcomes Dagmar Röhrlich as the 2010 Goethe Writer in Residence.

Born in Aachen in 1956, Röhrlich studied geology and currently works as a freelance science journalist -- regularly contributing to journals such as Mare as well as a number of radio programs (Deutschlandfunk). She has also published several books, the latest of which is titled Urmeer. Thanks to her work in radio- and print-media, she has won several awards including the prestigious Georg von Holtzbrinck Prize for Science Journalism (1999).

While in Vancouver, Röhrlich will be researching several topics including the Census of Marine Life. On top of this she will be giving  workshops and talks at the School of Journalism. One such talk titled 'Counting the Ocean: Journalistic coverage of the Census of Marine Life' will occur on 06 October. More details about this event can be found below.

Alexander Smoltczyk - the 2009 IES Goethe Writer in Residence

The UBC Institute for European Studies (IES) and the Goethe Institute Toronto welcome Alexander Smoltczyk (biography) as the 2009 IES Goethe Writer in Residence. Smoltczyk is one of Germany's leading reporters in print journalism, with works published in periodicals and newspapers such as the tageszeitung, Geo, Der SPIEGEL and Die Zeit.

While at  the IES, Smoltczyk will be  looking at the environmental situation in Western Canada, focusing on the issues surrounding the Pacific Salmon as a case study.  As part of his activities, Smoltzcyk will participate in the collaborative efforts between the IES and the UBC Fisheries Centre (under the leadership of Dr. Rashid Sumaila), and will give talks at both the UBC Vancouver School of Journalism and UBC Okanagan. This research is but a one component of the pillar in the IES program to fight and research global warming.

Alexander Smoltczyk (2009)

Alexander Smoltczyk is one of Germany's leading reporters in print journalism. Most of his work is published in tageszeitung, Geo, Der SPIEGEL and Die Zeit.

Smoltczyk was born in Berlin in 1958 and studied philosophy, economics and agriculture in Berlin and Montpellier (France). In 1989 he moved to Paris as a  correspondent for the left-centered daily "tageszeitung", then joined the editorial east-west-project "Wochenpost" in Berlin. His travel writings appeared in GEO-Magazine and were awarded by two "Kisch-Preis" for the best reportage of the year. Since 1998, he has been a staff reporter for Germany’s newsmagazine “Der SPIEGEL” and covered diverse topics, ranging from 9/11 to siamese twins to the hunt for the Caucasian snowman in Abkhazia.

Since 2005, Smoltczyk lives with his wife and daughter in Rome, covering Italian politics and the Vatican.

He has written several books, among them a biography of Ken Adam, a set designer for the early James Bond films, and a book about the French Revolution. His latest work, written in 2008, is "Vatikanistan", which is a traveler’s companion to the Holy Sea.

Former IES European Journalist in Residence gets the Goettingen Peace Award

Andreas Zumach, journalist for the German daily die Tageszeitung and other European media outlets, has been awarded with the Goettingen Peace Prize, endowed by the Foundation Dr. Roland Roehl. Zumach was the first European Journalist in Residence of the IES. Andreas Zumach is an expert in international security topics and provided students of our MA Program with essential knowledge on European Security issues during his time at the IES. Congratulations Andreas!

Juliane von Reppert-Bismarck

Juliane von Reppert-Bismarck visited the Institute during the 2006 - 2007 academic year. She has written for The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Dow Jones Newswires and The Associated Press, covering politics, terror investigations and business. She has presented for Voice of America and ITN News24 and worked on radio documentaries for NPR and WFUV following the 9/11 World Trade Center bombings. Her reporting has taken her to the US, Algeria, Spain, France and sub-Saharan Africa.
