DAAD Internship: EMGIP Bundestag 2013

EMGIP - Bundestag offers internship opportunities for U.S. and Canadian students in the German parliament, the Bundestag. The internships are 2 months long in positions matching the student’s interest and experience. Interns will be placed within the Verwaltung, preferably with a Sekretariat working for their preferred Ausschuss. Asides from contributing to the respective offices, interns have the opportunity to study legislative and administrative procedures in the German parliament.

Program Objectives:

Balkans Peace Program (BPP) Summer 2012: Post-Conflict Development in Kosovo

This is an educational program that will provide students enrolled in a university outside of Kosovo and the region with the unique opportunity to spend about three weeks in Kosovo studying and learning about development in practice in a post-conflict area right in the middle of Europe. Participants of the program will also visit three other Balkans countries, Albania, Macedonia, and Montenegro.

Jindal Journal of International Affairs (Call for Papers)

The Jindal School of International Affairs (JSIA) and the Centre for European Studies (CES) are now accepting submissions for the Jindal Journal of International Affairs, April 2012 issue. Manuscripts from European Studies, Politics of EU and related fields, European Anthropology, EU Economic Crisis, European Critical Security Studies, European Cosmopolitan Ethics, European Identity, European Enlargement, European Minority Rights and Identity, European Convention on Human Rights [ECHR], are particularly welcome. Authors should ensure that their submissions are original contributions, between 5000 to 8000 words and should not be under consideration for any other publication at the same time. Book reviews or Review Essays of about 1000-1200 words on the above and related topics are welcome.

European Union: Instances of Cooperation and Discord (Call for Papers)

On March 2nd, 2012, York University’s European Union Center of Excellence will be holding its third annual Graduate Student Conference at its Glendon Campus in Toronto, Ontario. This year’s theme will be “European Union: Instances of Cooperation and Discord/ Union Européenne: entre coopération et désaccord”. The purpose is to showcase graduate student work and promote debate on topics relating to the European Union.

Democratic states tend to guarantee free movement within their territory to all citizens. Similarly, the European Union guarantees the right to live and the right to work anywhere within EU territory to EU citizens and members of their families. Such rights reflect the project of equality and undifferentiated individual rights for all who have the status of citizen. But they are not uncontested. Within the EU, several member states have or propose to reintroduce border controls and restrict access for EU citizens who claim social assistance. Some, most notably France and Italy, have emphasized their expulsions of Roma, which challenge human rights norms against discrimination. Within democratic states, particularly federal ones and others where decentralized jurisdictions are responsible for social welfare provision, it sometimes appears that some citizens are more equal than others. Principles such as benefit portability, prohibition of residence requirements for access to programs or rights, and mutual recognition of qualifications and credentials facilitate the free flow of people within states and reflect the attempt to eliminate internal borders. The purpose of this workshop is to explore the politics of free movement and discrimination in the EU and a range of democratic states.

Participants will be asked to revise their contributions for publication. Please send an abstract to Willem Maas (maas@yorku.ca) as soon as possible but no later than September 5. We will notify participants promptly following this date.

Review of European and Russian Affairs (Call for Submissions)

The Review of European and Russian Affairs, housed at the Centre for European Studies (the EU Centre of Excellence at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada), invites submissions of academic articles from young researchers. A recent conference paper or an extract from high quality thesis work could be adapted for the journal.
