Scotland, Quebec, Catalonia: Must Nations Become States?
Philip Resnick, Political Science
Piano Lounge, Green College, UBC

September 16, 2014 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm

On Sept. 18, Scotland will be voting in a referendum on whether to become an independent country. Twice, in 1980 and 1995, Quebecers voted in a referendum on Quebec sovereignty. In Catalonia, the regional government has been pressing for a referendum on independence from Spain.

What are some of the common characteristics of nationalism in these three national communities? What are some of the obstacles to their becoming independent states?

Philip Resnick, recently retired from the Political Science department, has spent a good part of his academic career exploring nationalism in multinational states. His talk on Sept. 16 will address these three cases.
