***Shortlisted for the 2009 BC National Award for Canadian Fiction***

Christopher Shulgan, a heavily reported and honoured feature writer, presents his book about Aleksandr Yakovlev, former Ambassador in Canada for the Soviet Union, and the right hand man of Mikhail Gorbachev. Although formerly a faithful communist, here in Canada Yakovlev began to understand western democracies through his close friendship with Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. He became fascinated with elections, and became an expert in the workings of a market economy.
