Serbulent Turan (MA, College of Europe; MA, Bilgi University & Leiden University) is a PhD candidate in the Political Science Department at the University of British Columbia, Canada. He specializes in Political Theory, in particular the constitution and legitimacy of political authorities, norms of political obligation and social discipline. His dissertation – ‘Patterns of Obedience; Dreams, Demons and the Dead’ – investigates historical contingencies in European history that were instrumental in bringing about modern, democratic concepts of citizenry, political obligation and obedience to political authority. His teaching interests include introductory political theory, history of political ideas, history of democratic ideas and the Enlightenment.
